Firstly, my most sincere condolences to Alan and his complete family, to his co-workers with Hearst Youth Parole and to his vast array of friends, fostered through his decades of being an open book to all who crossed his path.
I first met Al when I was twice posted to Hearst OPP Detachment during the late 70s to the mid 80s. Al was often consulted on matters of mutual interest in his role a YPO in Hearst. He was always friendly, concerned and astute, as well as being very un-judgemental. I was aware of his deep devotion to the Hearst Lumberjacks, but was pleasantly surprised to learn about his commitments to so many other clubs and services in Hearst.
After being promoted out of Hearst to Bracebridge in 1984 I lost track of Alan until I joined 2 Hearst FB pages in 2025, when I used his name as a reference to be admitted to one of those pages. It was then that I learned of Al’s passion for serving his community and for his writings which had a huge amount of informative narrative about Hearst an environs. I chatted briefly with Al on line several times and it was last week via another Hearst workmate that I sadly learned of Al’s passing.
Rest easy and in eternal peace Al. You were a credit to your family, friends, workmates, your community and to oractically everyone who met you. I am sure many of the youth you counselled as YPO turned their lives around due to knowing & being counselled by you. Salut mon bon ami! Again, condolences to all your family and friends. Jim Martin

All our condolences to Sue and the family. We have known Alan through the Hearst Phoenix Swim Team (HPST) and worked side by side for the interests of all the young swimmers. He always had new ideas for fundraising for the swim team. Over the years he encouraged me to take over the presidency of the club and also encouraged Marie-Line to get involved in coaching. His leadership, infatigable energy and sense of humour are long standing souvenirs that will remain. He was such a generous and loving person and will be missed.

I was shocked and sadden to hear of Al's passing. My deepest condolences and sympathy to Susan and family. Will always cherished the good times when Michel Hamel and myself would come to town pour le Tournoi des Deux Glaces; Al and Susan would make sure that we get some good food in us and on Saturday mornings Susan would dish out the most delicious breakfast of champions! Alan was a most wonderful human being. He has left us way too soon. May he rest in peace.

Having spent many years working with Al in the area of young offender probation services, I witnessed Al's genuine concern for his clients and the incredible effort he consistently put forth to provide guidance and direction. Al was totally dedicated to his profession and I am grateful to have worked alongside. I will always remember the times we spent chatting about things like sports (especially hockey), grouse hunting, fishing as well as food (Sue's culinary skills of which I thoroughly enjoyed). Yet, our conversations usually ended with work related matters which again illustrated Al's devotion. My sincerest condolences to Sue and family.

I was saddened to hear of Alan’s passing. I worked with him for years in the court system and he was so dedicated and respected by his clients. He was very well respected by all jusice participants. I have fond memories of Alan and Sue’s annual Christmas luncheon for many justice participants. Sincere condolences to Sue and the rest if the family. May he rest in peace.

Alan was a friend from childhood, attending Hearst Public School, now known as Clayton Brown Public School. In high school, we shared common interests in student council, curling, & hockey. Alan was always the level headed guy, a great listener, eager to find solutions for challenges. His gentle ways, kindness to all, & tireless efforts were always the reliable, respected friendship consistently present. He was a dedicated advocate for youth in both his work & volunteerism. He was immensely proud of his family & grandchildren. He always had a joyful story & photo to share of his treasured family moments. In recent years, he dedicated his efforts to sustain the Lumberjacks hockey team in any way he could.
Alan was a remarkable man!
To Sue, Alison, Kristy, Matthew, spouses, & grandchildren, I want to express my sincere sympathies. I am truly sorry for your loss but grateful for the joyful memories you hold close to your hearts.

A few summers ago our Group , the Ontario Northland Railway Historical and Technical Society , had our summer convention in Hearst. Alan and a few friends came out to meet us and make us welcome. Please accept my condolences and hearfelt prayers to all family and friends on Alan's passing. A childhood friend and classmate from grade school through high school, I have always thought of Alan as the one who went back. After high school, the vast majority of us left Hearst to build lives and careers elsewhere. Alan did too, but it wasn't long before he moved back and stayed, giving back to the community in more ways than most of us probably know. Many of us admired him for that.

What a tremendous loss... thinking of Sue and the family. Lucky us that we were welcomed into the Jansson home while Max was playing for the Lumberjacks. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Jansson family. Alan will be greatly missed as an Ambassador for the Town of Hearst. He was able to reach out to former residents of Hearst through his numerous postings on Facebook. He was always visible and made enormous contributions to various sporting activities. His biggest contribution was to the Hearst Lumber Jacks, he made players feel part of the community. There is much to be said of my friend Alan, in my mind he was a legend and will be greatly missed. RIP ALAN!
